Robert L. Strausberg, Ph.D., Named Director for Collaborative Sciences of LICR

NEW YORK, NY - December 7, 2009 - The Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research Ltd (LICR) announced today that Dr. Robert L. Strausberg is joining the staff as Director for Collaborative Sciences. Dr. Strausberg's appointment reflects the growing emphasis that LICR is placing upon its disease oriented research effort in the form of Cancer Initiatives, comprising collaborative networks of investigators from LICR Branches, affiliates and Ludwig Trust Centers around the world. These Initiatives serve as a means to focus basic and translational laboratories on the disease and provide participants with access to well annotated clinical samples. Currently the Institute has Brain, Breast, Colon and Ovarian Cancer Initiatives and a Melanoma Initiative.

Researchers Uncover Potential Mechanisms to Protect Against Genetic Alterations, Diseases

Researchers at the San Diego Branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego have pinpointed a large number of genes that can prevent a type of genetic rearrangement that may lead to cancer and other diseases. The study was published today in the advance online publication of Nature.
